What Are the Duties of a Supermarket Stock Clerk?

Sophie Perrin

One of the most essential jobs in a supermarket is that of a stock clerk. Although in many cases the same person performs duties associated with different roles, large stores with many customers typically employ this specific profile.

While cashiers are solely responsible for payments and customer service, supermarket stock clerks have specific duties that significantly improve the operation of the store. Thanks to the tasks performed by stock clerks, product turnover is ensured and the order established by the supermarket, previously agreed with certain suppliers, is maintained.

If you want to define the duties of the stock clerks at your supermarket or post a job vacancy, do not forget to include these eight essential skills:

1. Unpack merchandise

When consumables arrive at the supermarket, stock clerks are responsible for receiving and unpacking them to check that there are no damaged products. If there are, they will begin the return process.

2. Label products

Once unpacked, they label them with the barcode needed to identify them, certify their traceability and provide price information when payments are made at the checkout.

At times, stock clerks are responsible for applying discount stickers for products close to their expiry date or for specific offers on certain products already displayed in the store aisles.

3. Organize the warehouse

Items in the warehouse must be organized so that anyone who needs to find them can do so as quickly as possible. Once the protocols and the most suitable order for each product have been defined, stock clerks must ensure that everything can be found in its proper place

Merchandise locations should be checked regularly and, above all, when goods arrive at the warehouse or when leftover items are returned after the store shelves have been restocked.

4. Identify products missing from shelves

Another of the most important duties of a supermarket stock clerk is checking the shelves to identify those areas where products are running out and need replenishing.

5. Restock shelves with new supplies

Once the items that are running low and the shelves where they must be displayed have been identified, stock clerks take the merchandise from the warehouse and restock the shelves so that customers never feel there is a shortage.

6. Check how stock is arranged on shelves

Each shelf has its own product arrangement and, depending on the season or temporary promotions, certain goods are given priority on the shelves, with stock clerks ensuring they are in their proper place. The placement of each item on a shelf must also be considered, as products with the nearest expiry dates must be positioned at the front.

In addition, customers often leave a product in the wrong place or disarrange merchandise, so several checks per day are needed to maintain the proper layout and face up items that have been pushed to the back of the shelves.

Once the items have been arranged, stock clerks must ensure that packaging, shelves and floors are clean.

7. Complete record sheets

Record sheets document all products taken from the warehouse to be placed in the store.

8. Assist customers

While stock clerks carry out their work, it is common for customers to approach them for information about a product or to find out where it is located. At all times, they must answer their questions accurately and courteously.

As you know, the main duties of a supermarket stock clerk require spending a lot of time on their feet and carrying heavy loads. It is therefore essential that they are equipped with comfortable, slip-resistant work shoes that prevent slips and falls as far as possible.
