A toe cap, colloquially also known as a “steel toe cap”, protects the toes from injuries caused by falling objects, as well as mechanical or human impact. To explore the question of whether these elements are always absolutely necessary in safety shoes, it is worth first taking a look at history.
Origins of the “Safety Shoe” Concept
Work shoes were not always equipped with toe caps. The predecessors of the concept we know today as safety shoes were fitted with a type of protective shell. These first appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. Before this development, employees of that era wore ordinary work shoes made of wood or leather. It was in these very shoes, which bore no comparison to today’s safety shoes, that the first workers entered the factories of the industrial revolution. Consequently, workplace accidents became more frequent, especially those affecting the feet. After all, where machines are used, accidents can happen. Unlike today, however, it was not yet customary to provide employees with appropriate protective clothing, and no social security system existed in the modern sense.
The Demand for More Safety Grows Louder
The consequences were dramatic for employees: if they were injured and consequently could no longer perform their work, or could only do so partially, it was more financially advantageous for factory management to dismiss the person concerned and hire new staff. In the long term, this fact, alongside many other injustices in the working environment of the early 20th century, led to immense and justified frustration among workers. “This led to protests and demands for better occupational safety. After their demands were repeatedly rejected, workers had had enough. They took off their clogs and angrily threw them at industrial machines to damage them and stop production – they wanted to “sabotage” their employers. This is how the term “sabotage” was born in France, as clog means “sabot” in French.” Although this anecdote cannot be conclusively proven historically, it nevertheless already demonstrates the immense importance of protecting employees in the workplace. Toe Caps and the Modern Safety Shoe
The subsequent historical development is at least generally known in outline: from working hours and occupational safety to social insurance and legal requirements, considerable progress can be observed from the beginnings of industrialisation to the modern working environment. The concept of the safety shoe became increasingly specified in the course of this development and is now standardised.
The EN ISO 20345 standard specifies the requirements a shoe must meet to be considered a safety shoe. In addition, Section 5 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the BG rules of the employers’ liability insurance association govern the circumstances under which company management is obliged to provide its employees with safety shoes. Examples include construction, industry, fire and emergency medical services, as well as butchers and chefs. Personnel must be equipped with safety shoes whenever there is a risk of foot injuries due to mechanical, electrical, chemical and/or thermal impact. This also includes handling industrial trucks such as cranes or pallet trucks, which are indispensable in logistics, postal and courier services. This explanation already anticipates what should now be clear: under current legal regulations and the EN ISO 20345 standard, a work shoe is only considered a “safety shoe” if it has a toe cap that must withstand a force of at least 200 joules.
