What Are the Duties of a Store Sales Assistant?

Sophie Perrin

In 2024, 3.44 million businesses were engaged in retail trade in the European Union, according to data collected by the study Talent trends in the retail sector, conducted by the National Association of Large Distribution Companies (ANGED) and Manpower. These companies employed 16.6 million people, making the commercial distribution sector one of the leading generators of employment on the continent.

These figures are also reflected in Spain, where the number of workers in the sector is 5.5% higher than before the pandemic. If we take into account that, according to the same study, the turnover of retail companies in Spain reaches €165,600 per employee per year, we can understand the importance of the duties of store sales assistants, namely the professionals who are directly responsible for sales to customers.

The work of these professionals is essential to the consumer experience, customer attraction and loyalty. Today, we live in an increasingly digitalised environment, which has diversified their duties, but they remain the figure in direct contact with the public and are decisive when it comes to customer decision-making.

What are the main duties performed by a store sales assistant?

The impact of retail on Spain's economy is more than evident, and the responsibilities undertaken by store sales assistants in their day-to-day work directly influence how businesses operate and, therefore, the sector as a whole. Beyond simply serving customers, their work encompasses a range of tasks focused on customer satisfaction that have a direct effect on commercial results.

1. Customer service and advice

This is the most visible part of their duties. Store sales assistants answer customers' questions, advise them on available products and offer alternatives suited to their interests. Sometimes, issues or conflicts may arise with customers that require a quick solution. Friendly and empathetic treatment builds trust and improves the store's image.

2. Stock management

Every store must maintain thorough control of all stock available for sale in order to provide customers with the product they want. The sales assistant regularly checks stock, replenishes items when necessary and reports any supply issues to their supervisors.

3. Store organisation

The way products are displayed in the store influences purchase intent. One of the sales assistant's duties is to ensure that the store is clean, tidy and attractively laid out.

4. Payments and returns

Another everyday duty is handling transactions. The payment process must be fast and efficient, avoiding queues and errors. In addition, the sales assistant is responsible for ensuring that returns are handled smoothly and effectively, in line with company policy.

5. Customer loyalty and knowledge updates

Beyond serving customers, a sales assistant must have commercial skills that enable them to increase sales. To do so, in-depth product knowledge is essential, allowing them to suggest complementary items at the point of purchase. This requires ongoing training in industry trends, innovations in the product range and sales techniques to improve the customer experience.

What Are the Duties of a Store Sales Assistant?

Keys to improving the work of a store sales assistant

According to a study by the Comisiones Obreras trade union mentioned in the newspaper El Español, Spain needs 16,000 workers in the commercial sector. One of the main reasons for this shortage is job insecurity. Store sales assistants are fundamental to business growth, so it is important for companies to adopt measures that promote job satisfaction, which directly impacts team commitment and contributes to the store's positive image and customer loyalty.

1. Improving working conditions

One of the main problems in the sector is temporary employment and a lack of stability. Opting for contracts with good working and pay conditions provides security and reduces staff turnover. In addition, the company must organise shifts properly to guarantee employees' rest.

2. Providing appropriate equipment

Comfort and safety are essential for professionals to be satisfied. Work equipment has a major influence on this. Uniforms must be comfortable and support wellbeing throughout the day. Store workdays are usually long and require standing for many hours, which can cause health problems without suitable footwear.

3. Providing professional footwear as a talent retention tool

Retaining store sales assistants involves looking after their day-to-day wellbeing, and lightweight, comfortable shoes with slip-resistant soles contribute to this by helping to reduce fatigue and prevent injuries. Providing footwear suited to the demands of store work sends the message that the company is committed to employees' health and professional satisfaction. This measure strengthens the sense of belonging and becomes a highly effective strategy for retaining talent in a sector with high staff turnover.

4. Honest and open communication

A positive work environment improves motivation and performance. Encouraging communication between colleagues and managers, creating a respectful atmosphere and recognising individual and collective effort all help the team feel valued and strengthen its commitment to the business.

5. Offering training and development opportunities

Continuous learning is an incentive for all workers, especially in a sector where technological innovations require constant updates. Providing training on products, customer service, sales platforms and techniques helps store sales assistants feel better prepared to perform their duties. In addition, professionals' motivation increases when they know there are opportunities for growth within the company.
